Camp Kanuga has always felt like paradise to campers young and old. Now, Camp Kanuga offers a true taste of tropical paradise with a special Hawaii Expedition for 2019.
Available to campers ages 15-18 years old, the program allows youth to experience personal growth while giving back to the community.
Adventure and Volunteer Opportunities in Paradise
Campers will spend part of their time exploring Hawaii’s breath-taking beauty. The trip includes time in Kaua’i where campers will have multiple adventures. “We’re planning fun stuff like mountain biking, surfing, sea kayaking through the rainforest to a waterfall, and day hikes to various waterfalls,” says David. A catamaran boat tour with snorkeling is also on the itinerary.
While fun is a major component of the trip, there are also unique volunteer opportunities. “There are two major pieces to this program. It’s not just adventure,” says David Schnitzer, Camp Kanuga Director. “It’s also leadership development and service.” During their stay in Hawaii, campers will also assist with running a day camp at Camp Mokule`ia on Oahu’s beautiful North Shore. The camp serves kids who could not ordinarily afford to go to summer camp.
A Dream in the Making
While this will be the Hawaii Expedition’s maiden voyage, the logistics have been planned for over a year. This year’s trip will include three experienced Camp Kanuga group leaders from the Expedition program. A maximum of 12 students can participate.
While outdoor experience isn’t necessary, a big heart and a willingness to learn is required. “This trip is designed for someone who wants to have an adventure and grow alongside other people,” says David. “It’s a chance to try things that you’ve never done before in a place you’ve never been before. It’s also an opportunity to give back to the community where we’re staying.”
A Trip with Lasting Impact
Like other Camp Kanuga experiences, the Hawaii Expedition promises personal growth, lifetime memories, and treasured friendships. David reveals there’s also another bonus to the experience. “When you try something that is new or different and it becomes a positive experience, then the whole world is less scary. Things seem more exciting. There’s a lot out there beyond your bubble and a lot of wonderful people.”
