With the first day of Camp Kanuga less than two months away, there’s a sense of excitement in the air. This year, campers have a variety of new offerings waiting them once the bell rings and 2018 season officially begins.
Adventure and New Activities
Having fun and enjoying safe thrills is the goal of the new double zip line that crosses over Camp Kanuga’s lake. Designed and installed by Phoenix Experiential Designs, a North Carolina company with over 54 years of experience, the zip line provides campers with a bird’s eye view as they soar through the air to land gently on the other side of the lake.
Older campers will have the opportunity to step back into time and discover the craft of blacksmithing. The addition of a new blacksmithing shop allows campers the opportunity to learn under the guidance of a local craftsman.
Campers will work on mastering basic techniques such as hammering, shaping, and bending metal. They’ll use these skills to create hooks, key chains, nails, and decorative art pieces. The aim is to encourage creativity while also teaching communication, teamwork, and safety.
Teaching Vital Skills through Fun
Camp Kanuga Director David Schnitzer is excited to reveal the new offerings to campers. “I want our campers just laughing, smiling and full of joy all day. These new activities help provide this type of experience,” says David.
While fun at camp is always the goal, there’s also a larger plan in place according to David. “The activities are more than just fun. They are tools. Campers are learning all sorts of new skills. They are growing. They are taking risks. They learning how to communicate with peers and build community. Most of all, all of our activities are tools to build relationships,” says David.
