Why We Do What We Do

“Camp is… home. I cherish every second I spend at Camp Kanuga because it is the one place on earth that I feel completely welcomed, loved, and included.” Charleston, SC.

Just because the floored rec is not resounding with morning shouts and energy, and the gaga pit sits empty yearning for summer campers does not mean we sit on our laurels! We are busy creating new programs, adventures and ideas for this coming summer… which causes us pause and think about why we do what we do.

Camp matters. It makes a difference. Camp allows children, youth, and adults to form a special community where great things happen. In an environment created just for them, children learn real life skills, develop self-esteem, and build their own sense of independence.

Our campers are surrounded by Christian role models that love God and love kids – our 2 main criteria above all else for choosing our staff. Whatever walk of life they come from, they are safe here to explore the beauty of this place and learn in love more about our Creator as they take on challenges that shape them for life.

Every year, we anticipate with excitement seeing our campers return year after year – marveling at how much they’ve grown and we want to hear their stories. We look forward to seeing brand new faces and hope they too will come to call us home.

We hold precious the opportunity of getting to know our summer staff – through joy and challenges.  We love our returning staff – they know the ropes.  But it’s also very rewarding seeing the new ones who’ve launched into unchartered territory grow and become creative, passionate members of our Camp Kanuga family.

Bob Ditter, a well-respected child therapist and one of the United States most highly regarded consultants to camps regarding child development adds, “It is in the crucible of this community that children gain self-esteem with humility, overcome their inflated sense of self, and develop a lifelong sense of grace and wonder.”
