Camp Kanuga’s new mountain biking program will be offered for the first time this summer to campers ages 11 and older.
Set on a 50-acre mountain biking park on Camp Kanuga’s campus in Hendersonville, NC, campers will learn how to ride and maintain a mountain bike before hitting the trails. Those introductory lessons and training will take place in a terrain park which will also house the mountain bike storage barn and shop.
David Schnitzer, director of Camp Kanuga, reached out to community partners to help build the terrain course and bike barn. The Home Depot heeded his call. The Home Depot Foundation awarded a $3,500 grant to supply materials for the project. Additionally, 10 Team Depot volunteers from the Hendersonville Home Depot helped build the course and 16’ x 32’ bike barn. The terrain course includes a pump track and training area where campers will learn how to ride over obstacles and control their bikes on uneven surfaces.
“We’re grateful for The Home Depot’s generous support,” said Schnitzer. “Their efforts will help our new biking program benefit campers in many ways. The challenge of mountain biking will help campers develop self-discipline and good decision-making skills. It’s also a lifelong sport that they can fall in love with here and enjoy for the rest of their lives.”
Operating since 1931, Camp Kanuga is a part of Kanuga Conferences, Inc. and serves more than 600 boys and girls, ages 7–17, annually at its accredited Christian summer camp. The camp is designed to instill self-reliance and confidence while teaching the importance of respect towards each other, nature and God.
